We tried coming to Margaritas at Demspey a couple of months back, but it was closed for refurbishment. My friend has been raving about the food here for so long, that we finally booked a table (we had to practically beg to be squeezed in as they were fully booked) and headed up here on Friday night.
We obviously went straight for a round of margaritas – strawberry and frozen, of course – which were tasty, although the tequila wasn’t very evident (although some would say that’s a good thing!) and the glasses came rimmed with salt which led to a heated discussion about whether fruit margaritas should have salt round the rim or not… I noticed that everyone without exception wiped it off, regardless of their opinion…
We also later sampled the Mango version, but it rather paled in comparison to its Strawberry cousin.
We were all so hungry we ordered up some nibbles while we looked at the menu – some fantastic Nachos which disappeared in about three seconds flat (hence the half empty plate in the picture, I barely got in there in time!)
and some Jalapeno Poppers - not on the menu, you have to be in the know! These were tasty but we all agreed were disappointingly lacking in heat (of the spicy variety)
We then ordered up our own choice of main courses – the Kitchen Sink Burrito for myself and Mr Greedy Glutton, which as its name suggests, has a little bit of everything – chicken, beef, vegetables and rice all wrapped up and topped with Salsa, Sour Cream, Jalapenos and Guacamole.
I was however a little envious of the rice side order that came served with others’ Beef Burritos and Vegetable Enchiladas, which was buttery and scrumptious.
All in all we had a great meal, the food (and obviously the company) was great – I do think they could perhaps crank up the salsa tunes a tad… get a party atmosphere going… and perhaps encourage a few more margaritas and tequilas to flow in the process… now that’s my kind of Mexican meal…

Yes! Totally! I LOVE the Magaritas there. I'm now on the hunt to look for great Magaritas ard Sg!
ReplyDeleteI visited Margarita's at Dempsey just recently for dinner and yes it was packed. Food was good but I felt the portions were a little small for the price. For eg. $34 for fajitas and it wasn't huge. $12 for dessert and it was tiny. 3 of us and the bill was $221. Quite high considering we only had 2 alchoholic margaritas, 2 main courses and 2 desserts among the main dishes we ordered. So I wrote to the owner to query and this was the reply I received from Andy Yap, the owner by email (reply is shortened for brevity) :

We at Margarita's always pride ourselves by using the freshest, the best possible ingredients that is
available in the market for our cuisine. As we say, this is no smashed beans & chile place.
You must understand that we hardly use any local products or produce
here. Everything, from the simple chile hot sauce, right to the
chocolates are procured directly from Mexico. Authenicity means cost!
We are using the famous Cagliari Gran Rossa coffee beans to make our cuppa. At $6 a
pop, this is value for money. If you know this, you will know what I am talking about?
If you are going to compare us to one of those coffee joints that
serve jumbo mugs of coffee, please don't.
2. We serve water free. Don't exaggerate by saying we give you a tiny, weeny water glass. We
uses standard 14 ozs glasses here. On the contrary, what you are
saying is that you were
a pain to my poor waiter the whole night, getting him to top up your
glass after every 2 sips. Hey, water supply is not free for me,I have
to pay to give you free and yet ...
3. Desserts. They are not overpriced. With all the liqour and good
quality chocolate that goes into it, I seriously don't know what you
are talking about. Talk about big portion?, try going to any of the
cafes in Dempsey.
4. Margaritas - Do you know your margaritas? Here we served super premium
margaritas, not cheap weak margaritas or slushes
No one can compete with us here for this type of margaritas on
this kind of
pricing. It's already value for money.
You are the first person to bitch about our fajitas. Portion is
huge & is meant for 1 person. things.
We are not talking about tomato ketsup, maggie chilli sauce, local
chillies, but salsa, our salsa contains 3 types of mexican chiles - Serranos,
Chipotles and Jalapenos, you think is free???
I don't know whether you have really been aound in Dempsey to dine. In
fact, in Dempsey, Margarita's has the reputation of being one of the
least expensive place to dine.
So you asked what are diners like you
paying for ....
AIDIOS!
